The urbanisation of China, and speculative enterprise of city villagers

Caitlin and Michele walk the city with Shenjing He, discussing with one of our longest serving journal editors the complexity of Chinese urbanism, urban villages at the heart of megacities, and the nuances of studying gentrification. We hear about how speculation and the ‘enterprising self’ play out, and we dodge a few barking canines in a loud dog park, in search for global urban lessons. We get prompted to go ‘inland’ beyond the more popular urban sites of theorising Chinese urbanism, and recall the important of thinking through processes in urban research.

Shenjing He is Professor and Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design in the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong, and an Editor of Urban Studies. Her work focuses on urban redevelopment/gentrification, policy mobility and entrepreneurial urbanism, with an eye to the rural-urban dynamics shaping cities today.

If you liked our walk, you might want to follow up on Shenjing’s work in Urban Studies in the Related Articles section below.

And if you want more, we very much recommend Shenjing’s recent book:
