Announcing Urban ARC 2020 and Sixth Annual PhD Workshop at IIHS

The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is pleased to announce the sixth edition of the annual PhD Workshop to be held from 13-15 January 2020, and the fourth edition of their annual research conference, Urban ARC, to be held from 16-18 January 2020. Both events will be held at the IIHS Bengaluru City Campus.

Urban ARC 2020: Equal Cities

The conference theme this year is ‘Equal Cities’. This edition will focus on the conceptual, theoretical and practical understanding of notions of equality and equity in the context of a rapidly urbanising world. Debates around equity in cities have engaged with a wide range of themes – around questions of identity (through the politics of race, or caste, for example), around issues of income inequality and poverty, on the implication of, and the relationship between, emergence of new forms of work and employment in the Urban (through the ‘gig’ economy, for instance), spatial inequality, access to affordable housing and segregated cities, to mention a few.

The call for proposals in now open. Scholars and practitioners working on themes of equity in the Urban, are encouraged to send in their abstracts by 2 November 2019. For more information on the theme and the application process, visit the IIHS website.

Sixth Annual PhD Workshop at IIHS

The PhD workshop at IIHS provides a dedicated space for doctoral students to expand on their work while interacting with eminent scholars in the field. The workshop hosts participants from across a wide range of disciplinary mix, with the common thread being an interest in research practice that engages with the Urban. It is designed to provide a platform for early and mid-to-late stage doctoral students to explore in-depth, and further fine-tune, their work over an intensive three-day period.

Students in various stages of their doctoral career are invited to submit their applications by 2 November 2019. Details on the modules, faculty and application process are available here.
