Urban History Beyond the Academy Symposium, Leeds Beckett University, 25th May 2018
During the roundtable discussion at the Urban History Group Annual Conference in 2017, the issue of the influence of urban history in shaping the world beyond the academy was raised. In particular, speakers highlighted the potential for taking urban history beyond the university in utilising local communities and professional groups in researching the contemporary city and in helping to shape current issues within the management of the urban environment. Urban history is already encountered beyond the formal academic setting in cultural institutions and practices, including museums, libraries, archives, visitor centres and tourist trails. History and heritage is also encountered in everyday negotiation of urban space, ranging from working in regenerated historic buildings, travelling around the city on the footprint of Georgian highways and visiting the Infirmary which stands as a legacy of the Victorian industrialist.
This one-day symposium invites proposals for papers on topics including, but not limited to:
- Collaborative projects in urban history between academic and non-academic partners
- Approaches to urban heritage and urban history
- Urban history in policy making and the media
- Town planning, history and heritage
- Urban history, public health and welfare
- Interactions between urban history and recreation in the city
- Urban regeneration and history
- Archives, Libraries, Museums and urban history
Keynote speakers: Louise Miskell (Swansea) and Katy Layton-Jones (Leicester).
Proposals of 250 words for papers of no more than 15 minutes should be submitted to Shane Ewen ([email protected]) and Tosh Warwick ([email protected]) by Sunday 15th April 2018. A small number of travel bursaries are available by application to facilitate the participation of postgraduates, early career researchers and unwaged/low income attendees. Please state that you would like to be considered for a bursary when submitting a proposal/registering to attend.
